Chapter Sixteen

This night was never ending it would seem.

Jasper threw me down into the passenger seat of his car when we made it out of Nico’s warehouse. He was pissed at me, but I didn’t have the energy to deal with his crabby mood. It’d been one thing after the other tonight, and I just wanted to go to sleep, wake up in the morning to a new day, and figure out where the hell I needed to go from there. I needed to get control back of the situation, but it wasn’t going to happen tonight.

Not a word was spoken in the car as we moved through the city’s traffic. He might like to poke and prod people until he could see what they had lying beneath their skin, but he already knew what lurked beneath mine. Perhaps he didn’t want to face that tonight. Maybe he worried that the mood I was in wouldn’t care about all our history and friendship. I would never do anything to hurt him, but I also never thought I’d be stupid enough to walk into Valentino territory without some kind of plan.

Apparently, that was wrong.

He followed me out of the car and through the parking garage in silence. The silence that surrounded him was filled with everything he wasn’t saying. It was suffocating in the elevator as we made our way up to my apartment. With the way he was acting, I’d assumed he would drive away as soon as I got out of his car, but he hadn’t.

I wasn’t ready to go into the apartment and face my uncle about my behavior. He was doing everything he could to help me. Striking deals and building an alliance with Santiago was part of that help. It wasn’t his fault that Santiago felt like he could try and take control of my plans and make them his own. I shouldn’t be taking it out on him. Uncle Tony wasn’t the kind of man that thrived in the darkness like I did. He should be living a life filled with sunshine and love. Instead, I’d trapped him with me in this plan that we were so close to being finished with.

I had so much to make up to him when we reached our destination.

“How did you know where I was?” I couldn’t stand the silence anymore.

“I have a tracker in your cell phone. There isn’t a place you could go where I wouldn’t find you.”

Why didn’t that surprise me? He would want to know where I was at all times so that he would be able to find me if anything went sideways. I should be grateful for his forethought, but right now all I could think about was the invasion of my privacy.

“Were you ever going to tell me about that?” I planted my hands on my hips and stared at him with a cocked eyebrow?

“I just did.” He pulled his copy of my apartment key out of his pocket and unlocked the door.
